For protein bars, we specifically looked for choices with no more than 300 calories per bar and a maximum of 10 grams of added sugar. In order to be considered a protein bar, we required at least 10 grams of protein per serving. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a condition in which acid and stomach contents regularly back up into the esophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn. Obesity increases the risk of developing GERD, and people who have obesity are advised to lose weight to decrease the symptoms. For those who are underweight, having GERD can make gaining weight a challenge. A person may have underweight for a variety of reasons, such as having recently recovered from surgery or a genetic predisposition to thinness. Or you may be an older adult who has unintentionally lost weight for nutritional or medical reasons.
Calorie-dense foods are foods that contain high amounts of calories relative to their weight. Some examples of calorie-dense foods include full-fat dairy products, fatty beef, oils, nuts, and seeds. A person may want to incorporate more calorie-dense foods if they are trying to gain weight. However, Papanos also emphasizes that protein powders should not be used to replace real food in your diet.
Whole milk is a good source of a variety of nutrients, particularly calcium. In particular, lamb is an excellent source of B vitamins, zinc, protein, and it even offers 175 mg of omega-3 per 100 grams (20). Arguably just as delicious as rib-eye steak, lamb chops are another rich source of calories. Rib-eye steak is also reasonably nutritious, and it offers a good range of B vitamins, iron, and protein (19). As previously discussed, all nuts offer a substantial number of calories. As olive oil is a concentrated source of fat, it contains a substantial number of calories, with just a tablespoon containing well over 100 calories.
One of my favourite books on stress is Robert Sapolsky’s Why Zebra’s Don’t Get Ulcers. In the section on digestion, Sapolsky explains that stress causes our digestive system to prioritize the shorter term over the longer term.
Or eating more soups, which are low in calories, high in water content, and can help you feel fuller for longer. However, they are dense in calories, so if you don’t pay attention to your portion size, those calories add up. Calorie density measures the number of calories in a specific weight of the food. Foods with low caloric density (like grapes) fill you up with fewer calories than foods with high caloric density (like raisins). Increasing your calories by about 500 beyond your daily maintenance calorie needs could allow you to gain about 15 pounds (6.8 kg) over 6 months.

This way, you will find it easier to meet calorie goals of 3000 calories a day and more. Also, red meat is a great fit for people on low-carb diets and for those trying to build muscle, especially bodybuilders, as red meat counts among the list of high-protein foods for weight gain.
If you are on a low-carb diet and want to boost your calorie intake, you need to keep your carbohydrates under control. High-calorie syrups have a lot of calories because they are made mainly from sugar, whether that comes from fruits, starch, or others sources, like sugar beets. Since eggs are low in carbs, you can complement this snack with other high-calorie foods made from whole grains, like an English muffin or a few slices of whole wheat bread. Seeds taste great sprinkled over whole-grain cereals, dipped in honey, mixed with dried fruits, or along with some canned tuna. Moreover, dairy snacks, like milk, yogurt, and butter, have the added benefit of being low in sodium.

Weigh yourself on a weekly basis, aiming for a goal of gaining 0.25–0.5% of your body weight per week. When you’re starting out, you first need to determine your maintenance calories — that is, the number of calories you need each day to maintain your weight.
Which food is best for weight gain?
Smoothies are the high-calorie snacks with the second-most calories, and so, they are one of your best allies if you are trying to gain weight. By implementing some of the foods in this list, we can quickly increase the total amount of calories we consume.
